Himba Girl

Description

This is a girl from a small Himba tribe in Namibia. The Himba people cover their skin and hair with something called Otjize, which is a mixture of butter, ash and ochre. They do this to protect themselves from the harsh sun, and has become a symbol of blood, life, and beauty for them.

The girl would always turn around and want me to take pictures of her hair. The fences you see are livestock enclosures and are at the very center of their village.

Beautiful photo! I remember seeing these folks back in the 1970s. I later saw more in Windhoek while I was working on Namibia's independence story. Lovely!
